What is a creative agency?

Here at Monchü, we call ourselves as a creative agency. But we know that the term ‘creative agency’ doesn’t always make it super clear what we actually do. So, in this post we’re going to have a go at explaining what a creative agency is.

Creative adj – ‘Relating to or involving the use of the imagination or original ideas to create something.’

Agency noun – ‘A business or organization providing a particular service on behalf of another business, person, or group.’

Combine these two definitions, and you get a pretty decent picture of what a creative agency does. A creative agency is an organisation made up of creative professionals (graphic designers, content creators, copywriters, digital strategists, web developers etc) which provides creativity and idea generation to create value.

In a nutshell, a creative agency helps clients to increase the impact of their brand, through design and marketing projects. Those clients might be small start-up companies, established businesses, charities, social enterprises, or other organisations. In the case of Monchü, we love working with charities (like our clients Pets As Therapy) and social businesses (such as Oxford start up Fungry) to help make the world a better place.

How a creative agency does this will depend on the goals, aims, and needs of any particular client. Usually a client will come to us with an idea or a need. We’ll then go away, do some research on the organisation and their target audience, and come up with a concept (or multiple concepts) on how we could help them achieve this. Take Taylor & Francis Group for instance. They came to Monchü looking for inspiration on how they could tell the stories behind the ground-breaking research published in their academic journals. Initially they were thinking of a social media marketing campaign, but we thought that a podcast would make the perfect medium for this story-telling need. So that’s what we pitched back to them. And so, the How Researchers Changed the World podcast was born.

There are a few benefits to working with a creative agency. Many of our clients are charities or small businesses, meaning they don’t have the budget to allow for an internal marketing or design team. A creative agency can be a cost effective way to hire some brilliant creative minds to work with your brand, without needing to recruit a full team. For clients who do have an internal design and marketing team, it can still be beneficial to work with a creative agency. These clients will often work with us on a particular campaign or project, where having an external pair of eyes can inject new ideas and inspiration.
